The brief

Sant Just City Council wanted to take its Municipal Market into the digital world… without losing the charm it has always had. A market is not a supermarket: there are people with names behind every counter, and that had to show.

The brief: a platform that puts tradition and technology together, gives the stallholders visibility and brings in new customers. The market of always, now onscreen too.

What we did

We designed a digital shop window in WordPress for every stall: easy to use, functional and close to home. Each stallholder has their own page to show products and opening hours and tell their story, and can update it without asking for help.

We ran a professional photo shoot, stall by stall. You can’t buy market photos from a stock library: the produce, the hands and the faces are the ones from here. That shoot is half the website today.

We adapted the «Naturalment Collserola» brand, the same one the town’s tourism site already carries, to strengthen the tie with the community and let market and town speak with one voice.

We added sections for the market’s activities and for MercART, its exhibition space. Tradition and culture, all in the same place: a municipal market is a public facility too.

The key

Digitising a market isn’t selling it online: it is letting people know who is behind each stall before they walk down to shop. The key was a page per stallholder and a camera in the market, not an online shop nobody asked for.

One stall, one page

A stall page has four things and needs no more: who (name, face, story in two lines), what (the produce, photographed on site), when (days and opening hours) and how (phone, orders, social). With that, someone new to the neighbourhood knows where to buy the fish before setting foot in the market, and the stallholder has a page they can show on their phone.

Around it, what turns a list of shops into the site of a public facility: the market’s activities and MercART, the exhibition space. You digitise a municipal market by telling people who is inside, not by adding a shopping cart.
