Wattly
Your car knows things. Now you do too.
The brief
Your Tesla knows a lot about you. The battery, every trip, every charge… and it tells you barely half of it. Wattly exists to open that black box: real-time telemetry, charging data, route analysis and battery health, all in one place.
And this is not a normal job: Wattly is a company the studio has a stake in, so here we do not only design. We also pull on operations, growth and marketing. When the product is yours, there is no “handover”.
What we did
We built a precision app for Tesla owners, connected to the manufacturer’s official API with the owner’s permission. One screen for what used to be scattered: live telemetry, charging history, trip analysis and the real state of the battery.
Six things, no endless menus. Live data (battery, range, location, climate, tyre pressure). Charges, with cost and energy per session and a home versus public comparison. Trips, with a map, consumption per kilometre and efficiency. Battery health, with degradation and cycles. A driving score. And automations: locking, climate, sentry mode and alerts.
We designed the website and the product for the world: the app and the site are in fourteen languages, from Catalan and Aranese to Japanese, and it plugs into AI assistants so you can ask your car things in plain language.
And because we are part of the project, we did not let go of it on launch day. Operations, growth and marketing, with the same judgement we designed it with: the information that matters, when it matters.
Useful information, close at hand.
A connected car produces an enormous amount of data and almost no answers. The key was deciding the six questions an owner actually asks, how much does charging cost me?, how is my battery doing?, how do I drive?, and building one screen per question. Everything else, out.
The project in numbers
What your Tesla was not telling you
The car records everything; the problem is that it records it for itself. Wattly connects to the manufacturer’s official API, with the owner’s authorisation, collects what the car already knows and stores it with history: that is why it can say what one particular charge cost, how much the battery has changed since you bought the car, or which route works out most efficient.
The rest is product judgement: do not show data, show answers. A good dashboard is not the one that shows the most, it is the one that makes you look less. And a disclaimer: Wattly is a product the studio has a stake in, so we are signing this case study as an interested party.
